Silk Pyjamas Strategy Guide: In-Season Tactics (Round by Round)

Congratulations. You’ve been brave!

  • Paid the entry fee
  • Hugged your team
  • Applied Vaseline
  • Acknowledged the crowd.
  • Now, you're ready to step into the cage. What’s your plan?

Round 1 Strategy - Don’t End Your Season Early

You can’t win a Silk Pyjamas Season in Round 1.

But you can definitely lose it!

    Round 1- Choose your identity:

  • The Survivor - “Stand ya base” pick a lock, whatever the odds and make it through the first hoping for a Wildcard boost.
  • The Aggressor - Play for BIG points, lead early, force pressure onto your opponents.
  • Both paths can win. What you do in Round 1 builds your foundation.

Survival vs Aggression (The First Big Decision)

Risk equals reward - but timing is key.

    Ask yourself before Round 1:

  • Do I want to lead early to force opponents to chase?
  • Or sit back, gather information to strike later?
  • If you spot an early opportunity, then you have to go for it. Decision making will shape your season.

Aggressive Round 1 Strategy (High Risk, High Reward)

    The Upside

  • Early advantage over competitors and more points to play in Round 2
  • You control the narrative inside the Rankings
  • Other players will have to take risks to catch up
  • Landing a big underdog early can mentally break your opponents.

    The Downside

  • Obviously, Lose and ALL-IN play and your season is effectively over
  • No points = No Round 2 or 3 plays
  • Remaining Wildcards are wasted. No chance to recover.
  • Stuck in Valhalla as a spectator, watching the rest of the Season play out until a New Silk Pyjamas Champion is crowned.

    More Details To Being Aggressive

To become a Silk Pyjamas Champion, you will probably need to be aggressive at some point in the season.

Being aggressive is not just limited to picking underdogs. You can also be aggressive by picking Wildcards. Use your knowledge on UFC Fighters to outsmart opponents. Do you believe more players will use their KO Wildcard on a fighter that could win by Submission, or Decision. Maybe their MMA record is weighted more towards KO victories which will draw the eye of other players, but recently they have been having more submission attempts. This is another edge to apply to your picks. If you’re correct, not only have you nailed a Winning Wildcard play, but you’ve wasted your opponents KO Wildcard.

This game is not just odds, it’s using the top 2 inches.

Conservative Round 1 Strategy (Pick Favourites & Stay Alive)

    The Upside

  • Remain in the game while risk-takers get punished
  • More data on how others are playing, what Wildcards have they played?
  • Heavy lies the head that wears the crown. Pressure is on those above you!
  • The Downside

  • You may fall behind early
  • Will need to make up for it in the later Rounds
  • The success of being a conservative in Round 1 will depend a lot on the results of the whole card. If the betting favourites sweep the card, then you’ll be in a good position as risk taking players drop into Valhalla. Trouble will come if a big outsider performs an upset on the card as you can guarantee that some shrewd players would have nailed it. So keep an keen eye on the results and hope the betting favourites do their job!

Something else to consider, if your risky Pick wins, you’re going to have a target on your back for Round 2. Players that sit below you in the rankings are going to have to make up ground. Pressure will continue to build throughout the season, this is even more true for the leaders in the Rankings. They might start believing that they’ve done enough, let their guard down and change their original plan. Searching for easier wins on the fight card and allowing players to catch up.

Round 2 Strategy - Moving Day

    Round 1 created the Rankings

    Round 2 shapes them.

It’s still true, you can’t win the Season in Round 2, get through this Round and you can become a contender.

    More Information = More Edge

Following Round 1, Silk Pyjamas Strategy becomes more intense in Round 2.

    You now know;

  • How many points the Interim Champion has in their balance
  • How many players are ahead of you
  • Which fighters they backed
  • Which Wildcards they’ve already used
  • Information is power. Use it to advance your position for the Final Round.

You don’t need to lead, yet. There are no prizes for the Interim Champions, only the Undisputed Champion wins the biggest prize. Ask yourself:

  • How many points do I need to be within striking distance for the Final Round?
  • Do I need to gain ground or protect my position?
  • And remember, there’s still work to be done, those above you may lose points in Round 2 and fall into Valhalla.

    Round 3

You made it, hypothetically, to the Final Round. You’re armed with your remaining balance and unused Wildcards left to play.

You can do nothing and hope everyone above you plays all their points, and loses. I suppose that’s a tactic. A tactic that takes the future out of your hands.

A Champion would risk it all. Leave nothing behind with no room for regret.

As always, do your own research and make your picks with confidence and conviction.
